Working with individuals of different sexual orientations can be a complex task. Even though modern society tends to welcome diversity, some issues still exist and challenge representatives of various minorities. As for LGBT people, it is necessary to note that their sexual orientation can result in problems in three areas, including mental health, physical well-being, and social sphere. It is required to consider these three elements when it comes to working with the representatives of sexual minorities.

Scientific evidence demonstrates that the three elements, including mental health, physical well-being, and social sphere, can significantly affect LGBT individuals. Firstly, a non-traditional sexual orientation can lead to stigma and discrimination (Caceres et al., 2020). As a result, such people face an emotional burden, which subjects them to depression and other psychological conditions (Chaney & Brubaker, 2018). Secondly, it is possible to find a correlation between a person’s sexual orientation and their deviant behavior. According to Chaney and Brubaker (2018), LGBT individuals are more subject to substance abuse, meaning that treating this condition should also include counseling about their sexual orientation. Thirdly, the representatives of sexual minorities report having social difficulties because of anti-same-sex legislation and other legal efforts that oppose homosexuality (Chaney & Brubaker, 2018). With all this in mind, it is not a surprise that people with alternative sexual orientations tend to conceal their identity to protect themselves from the possible harmful consequences (Smith et al., 2019). That is why counselors should do their best to ensure that they can address all the challenges while working with LGBT individuals.

When it comes to working with sexual minorities, it is reasonable to analyze a Christian worldview regarding this issue. Even though the Bible does not include any direct quotes regarding sexual orientation, one should emphasize that all people are equal before God. It is possible to interpret this statement in a manner that all individuals have the right to receive assistance irrespective of their sexual orientation. That is why one can say that the Christian worldview advocates for working with LGBT people by providing them with the essential service and not subjecting them to any form of prejudice.

In conclusion, it has been found that a person’s sexual orientation can subject them to adverse consequences in mental health, physical well-being, and the social sphere. Every counselor who is working with LGBT individuals should draw attention to these three elements and remember that providing such people with assistance meets a Christian worldview. This information can help counselors and me understand that a person’s sexual orientation and associated stigma can result in harmful effects. Thus, it is necessary to implement a comprehensive approach to help these people overcome numerous and versatile challenges.
