This book provides an account of the relationship between the choice of a place for the hazardous-waste landfills and social and economic position of the communities that inhabit these areas. The author states that the poorer and less educated the inhabitants are, the more chances there are that toxic-waste facilities will be located in the area (Bullard, 2018). The book gives clear perspective of what environmental racism is about, which is crucial for my report. Bullard (2018) also explains when environmental racism began and what is its history, asserting that people of Afro American descent more often live in ecologically unfriendly environment, since earlier they were deprived of many basic rights.
McCall, M. (2019). Environmental Racism: The US EPA’s Ineffective Enforcement of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. SJ Pol’y & Just., 13(49).
The article deals with the notions of environmental justice and environmental racism. The author states that while it is impossible for all people to enjoy equally good environment, the practice of environmental racism must definitely be banned. McCall (2019) highlights governmental inefficiency in dealing with this problem, which so far has not been properly addressed. While it is hard to introduce changes directly into governmental system, the problem might be tackled at the grassroots level. The author describes what communities do to address the problem. Setting up environmental organizations, rioting and protesting in the streets, suing companies that are engaged in setting up toxic-waste facilities, are among the things which might help to solve the problem. The indication of such activities add factual evidence to my report.
Mohai, P., & Bryant, B. (2019). Environmental racism: Reviewing the evidence. Routledge.
This book explicates the correlation between race and distribution of hazardous-waste landfills. The authors use the multivariate analysis to determine how race alone, apart from income and education, influences the location of hazardous-waste sites (Mohai & Bryant, 2019). Their findings show that racism can be the dominant factor that determines the distribution of toxic-waste sites when economic conditions of the surrounding communities seem equal. It adds a new perspective to my report since racial issues are addressed in the book separately form economic ones. The author answers the question of who is affected by environmental racism by stating that these are Afro American communities that suffer most. They are affected by tremendous impact of bad environment on their health. The book presents multiple evidence supporting my claim that these are Afro-Americans who suffer most from the environmental racism.
Pulido, L. (2017). Geographies of race and ethnicity II: Environmental racism, racial capitalism and state-sanctioned violence. Progress in Human Geography, 41(4), 524-533.
The book centers upon governmental shortfalls in ensuring every person in the US has equal environmentally friendly surroundings. While the environmental organizations managed to cope with many ecological problems, there is evidence that they actually failed to improve the environments of many Afro-American communities, living in poor districts. In this article, the author also shows how environmental racism affects local communities (Pulido, 2017). He states that people, belonging to communities situated near toxic-waste facilities, get depressed and frustrated more often than those living in environmentally friendly ones. Besides the data show that the level of mental deceases in higher among people, living near the hazardous-waste sites. The data are crucial for my report for they add factual evidence of the impact the environmental racism has on the Afro-American communities.
Washington, H. A. (2019). A terrible thing to waste: Environmental racism and its assault on the American mind. Hachette UK.
This book explicates the impacts that living near toxic-waste facilities have on the surrounding communities. The author describes in detail how bad environment affects people in terms of health, abilities and mental faculties. In his conclusions, Washington (2019) relies on data analysis that shows health issues directly correlate with the level of pollution of the environment in this or that district. In his findings the author shows that communities that live near the sites more often get cancer, Alzheimer disease or mental illnesses than communities that enjoy good environment. Besides, the data show that people belonging to these communities have lower IQ rating and not so often get to the universities as people who live in environmentally friendly surroundings. These findings add factual evidence to my report.
