When a Child’s birth takes place, everyone anticipates knowing the gender. Since then, we have intertwined in a society that outlines that girls like certain things while boys like other things. However, this should not be a limitation of what we believe in due to societal pressure. The definition of gender roles is a set of attitudes and behaviors considered by society that are desirable or acceptable for our gender or sex. It includes how society expects us to present ourselves, dress, gloom, and talk. The gender roles that we adopt from childhood continue to adulthood. The governing division of labor and responsibilities at home and work is influenced by gender. For Instance, society expects women to carry out house chores while men should own the high ranks in an organization.

Gender roles can transcend detrimental stereotypes about how a girl or a boy should behave. There are four basic types of stereotypes associated with gender; personal traits, where women are contemplated as emotional, whereas men should be aggressive and confident. Occupations in the aspects of men should be doctors and pilots, while women should be nurses and teachers. And lastly, it is in domestic behaviors where certain roles belong to a specific gender and physical appearance, like how a man or woman should resemble. All this can negatively impact people, but it is essential to recall that we are all distinctive, and neither sex nor gender should limit what we can do or define who we are.

Sexism is defined as discrimination, prejudice, or stereotyping that affects women basically due to their sex. Glass ceiling refers to barriers that prevent specific individuals from being promoted to executive and managerial positions. Institutionalized discrimination refers to the discrimination and biases of a group or an individual by the society and its institution as a whole through selection or unintentional bias as opposed to individuals making a conscious choice to prejudice (Alp Yılmaz). The second shift is a term that refers to childcare and household duties carried outside the home for pay. Both men and women experience double changes, but women tend to carry out these responsibilities often.
