There are different points of view in many areas of society. Along with the development of society, it is necessary to progress in attitudes toward certain factors appearing in contemporary human life. For example, the issue of the LGBT community is still controversial because citizens have different attitudes toward homosexual people. This leads to problems, such as discrimination against members of the LGBT community in society. Taking the IAT allows one to analyze the situation and identify possible factors that an individual needs to work on.
I have to start by characterizing my thinking, so I need to emphasize, that I consider myself a supporter of the LGBT movement because I know that it is acceptable and it is not dangerous. Moreover, it allows many people to feel more comfortable and free in many situations. The issue of love and equal rights with the heterosexual population is particularly acute because discrimination against homosexuals in business, culture, or politics is not uncommon. On love, a homosexual couple is often haunted by many threats from conservative and radical LGBT opponents.
Nevertheless, the IAT confirmed my view of the LGBT worldview, but with several nuances. First of all, it was revealed that I prefer heterosexual people in communication more because I associate more good things with such people (Project Implicit, 2021). It should be emphasized that this test is organized according to a system of associations. The main idea of the test is the individual has to make associations between the subjects under study and the general concepts, dividing them into good and evil (Project Implicit, 2021). Indeed, I often answered differently than I thought I would, but this can be explained by the fact that it is difficult to keep attention on a task for a long time.
I decided to delve into the question of my preference for heterosexual people in relationships. I read and analyzed an article about a conservative family that described the relationship between homophobic parents and their children’s worldview. For example, if two homosexual boys are born into different families, one of which is homophobic and the other progressive, their behavior will differ (Russell, 2019). The son of the homophobic family will still be gay, but he will try hard to hide it, and his actual orientation will happen much later than the other boy in question (Russell, 2019). I have applied this knowledge to my own life, and I realized that if I am more used to and enjoy spending time with heterosexual people, it’s because of my parents’ distorted values.
This story is an example of how this IAT fulfills an educational purpose. Any individual who wants to understand the situation will begin to research the issue, and as a result, the overall level of knowledge will increase. In other words, the website is a stimulant to learning about complex topics. In addition, as noted above, in the case of disagreement or non-acceptance of the results, the individual will understand what habits are worth working on. It may also happen that the expected results do not coincide with those received. This is since this test is psychological; that is, it depends on the specific time and condition of the individual.
The authors point out that you can take the IAT several times on the site itself to get the most objective result (Project Implicit, 2021). If the development continues to be inconsistent with expectations, it may signal a psychological struggle associated, for example, with prejudices that have been instilled in a person since childhood. It can also be caused by a traumatic experience, forming a psychological barrier that sources rejection or fear. In this case, another advantage of the IAT is that it reveals and points to psychological problems of the individual that can be resolved with a specialist. In this way, this test allows to fight against prejudice.
