Double-loop learning is an important concept that individuals need to become effective leaders. According to DuBrin (2018), this term “is an in-depth type of learning that occurs when people use feedback to confront the validity of the goal or the values implicit in the situation” (p. 398). In other words, double-loop learning implies that leaders admit issues affecting their team and determine how and whether their professional behavior contributed to problems. For example, if a department suffers from absenteeism and reduced motivation, the given concept should make managers doubt whether they utilize appropriate leadership approaches. DuBrin (2018) also admits that defensive thinking should be minimized to achieve double-loop learning. Consequently, all leaders should become familiar with the concept and rely on it in their professional practice to create a more effective and productive working environment.

In addition to that, self-discipline is another essential concept raised in Chapter 15. This term stands for “mobilizing one’s effort and energy to stay focused on attaining an important goal” (DuBrin, 2018, p. 399). Leaders are responsible for introducing specific interventions to make the working environment better. Managers should also draw attention to ensure that their behavior abides by these requirements. In this case, self-discipline is a leading concept that can help achieve successful results in this area. For example, a leader can stipulate that constructive criticism is beneficial because it helps find reasonable and feasible solutions to current issues. Self-discipline means that this manager should adequately respond to cases when one of the subordinates criticizes their ideas. The given concept implies that leaders should ensure that their professional behavior complies with the requirements applying to the entire workforce. That is why many managers should invest in developing self-discipline.
