Should You Necessarily Be Critical When Writing a Book Critique?
Writing a book critique is one of the greatest assignments for the development of the students’ critical thinking. Critical thinking is the ability to evaluate and adequately interpret the information.
The instructors offering you writing a book critique expect you to go far beyond the literary meaning of the words. You should apply your critical thinking when writing a book critique.
Writing a book critique: How critical should one be?
Remember that the words are always deceptive. Writing a book critique does not necessarily mean that you have to criticize the author’s ideas or strongly disagree with them. The first rule when writing a book critique is as follows: You do not have to be negative. Can you feel the difference between thorough analysis and criticism? This is what writing a book critique is based on.
Here are several important moments to focus on when writing a book critique:
- Writing a book critique should begin with bibliographical information about the book (the way you usually present a source in a Reference List).
- Find the thesis in the book. Can you identify the questions which the author is to address in the book? If so, then the thesis is correct and appropriate.
- How reliable and relevant is this book? Does the author use a variety of sources? If so, then the information presented in the book is objective.
- Present a summary of the author’s arguments. Do you find these arguments valid? Are there any other arguments that (according to you) should be presented in the book?
- How convincing is the author in making the arguments?
Do not be afraid to express your personal opinion or how the book has influenced your perception of some issues. Be creative in writing a book critique and you will succeed!
